About Me

I'm Roberto Paes, a software engineer and backend architect. I design and build high-complexity, end-to-end platforms — the kind where real-time data, distributed services and mobile clients all have to agree.

What I do

I work mostly in the Laravel/PHP ecosystem, pairing it with Node.js, Go, Python and Java where a problem calls for it. On the client side I build with Flutter and PWAs, and I'm comfortable owning the seams between them: native modules, hybrid frameworks and bidirectional real-time bridges.

How I got here

My work has centered on two demanding domains: urban mobility and logistics (ride-hailing and delivery platforms with background location tracking, dispatch APIs and distributed backend/client communication) and omnichannel messaging (multilingual real-time chat and support built on WebSockets). Both pushed me toward event-driven microservices, gRPC and systems that stay predictable under load.

What I care about

I care about clarity. A system I've touched should be easier to reason about than when I arrived: boundaries in the right place, data flowing in one direction, and no surprises hiding behind a request. I refactor as I go, and I'd rather delete a clever abstraction than explain it for the next year.

How I work

I lead with clean architecture and refactoring: decoupled code, clear service boundaries and designs that are easy to change. I keep a systemic view — from containers and telemetry up to the screens people actually use — and I lean on modern engineering workflows, including AI agents, to move faster without losing auditability or quality.

Tools I reach for

Laravel and modern PHP as the backbone; WebSockets, gRPC and queues for the real-time parts; Docker, Kubernetes and CI/CD underneath; and automated tests everywhere, because a feature isn't finished until it's proven.

Selected work

I've architected complete ecosystems for urban mobility and delivery — background location tracking, dispatch APIs and the distributed conversation between backend and clients — and multilingual, real-time chat and support platforms built on WebSockets, focused on high concurrency and efficient persistence.

Beyond the code

I'm remote and async-friendly, terminal-centric in my daily workflow, and happiest when I'm turning a messy, high-stakes problem into a system that just works. When I'm not building, I'm usually reading, tinkering with my setup, or taking apart something to see how it holds together — and occasionally putting it back together better than I found it.
